The Kai Carrier range provide busy 21st century families with an eco-friendly product that can be used over and over – and kids love them! Babies love the freedom of feeding themselves and develop both gross and fine motor skills along the way. Meet Carol & Denise - proud owners of Kai Carrier
We are very honoured to be taking over the business that Kylie has worked so hard to build up over the years. This is an exciting extension for our family in our personal journey of living our lives through minimising waste to protect our beautiful country, and planet, for our daughters and future generations to come.
We have both come from a background in the Floriculture industry, where we owned our own business exporting fresh cut flowers for 17 years.
Our family is very much into a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, where we enjoy living on a lifestyle property with our rabbit, two dogs, three cats and eight chickens. Since our girls were babies, we have strived to feed them wholesome food, free of preservatives and chemicals, and feel very proud to say that now, as teenagers, they choose to eat wholesome nutritious foods. Hence we have a passion for providing the real option of healthy homemade nutritious foods that can be contained and transported in environmentally responsible food pouches. Kai Carrier has now added to their range with sandwich and storage bags, which offer even more options for general household use
and waste minimisation.
Moving forward, we will continue on with the Kai Carrier vision and ethos of reducing plastic waste ending up in our oceans and landfill by supplying reusable, recyclable pouches and bags to our customers.
Kai Carrier Sustainability Policy
At Kai Carrier it is important for us to run a sustainable business operation, not just sell a product that is sustainable. So what exactly does sustainability mean?
The Cambridge dictionary defines sustainability as “the idea that goods and services should be produced in ways that do not use resources that cannot be replaced, and that do not damage the environment.”
Being sustainable is so much more than recycling your waste and reducing the amount of single use packaging that you consume, but it is a big part of it, and is something you and your family can do on a daily basis.
Since our products entered the market we have potentially prevented over 12 million single use pouches, packaging and cling film from ending up in landfill across NZ. This equates to over 4.9 tonnes of waste and this number grows every day!
How Kai Carrier is integrating sustainability into our business:
Kai Carrier is a Carbon Friendly Operation for 2021/2022 financial year (certified by Ekos).
The carbon emissions we measure include those created from electricity, driving, waste and freight. This means that the pouches you purchase have offset all their CO2 emissions from the time they leave our manufacturer, through all our management operations, to when they arrive on your doorstep. Further to this, we have also reduced our CO2 emissions where we can, so that you can be confident that together we are modelling a sustainable, low carbon future.
We are in the process of mapping the life cycle of our products so we are able to measure the carbon emissions created during the manufacturing process. We are working towards carbon neutral status for our products, however we are a small business, for whom the cost of getting an ISO measurement is a barrier, therefore have 'carbon friendly' staus at this point in time.
Kai Carrier employs and supports other businesses who have clear environmental policies and are actively working towards reducing their carbon footprint.
This ensures that our waste output is minimised from the point of manufacture through to the disposal of the pouches at the end of their lifespan.
Kai Carrier invests in educators and other businesses who are actively working to educate others about living more sustainably.
This includes sponsorship of Kate Meads (Waste Free Parenting) and the supply of products for her workshops.
We are proud to be a member of Keep New Zealand Beautiful.
Our membership enables this great organisation to continue campaigning to reduce waste and keep this country beautiful.
Kai Carrier is an Associate Member of the Public Place Recycling Scheme.
We believe that by investing in other businesses who share the same vision of reducing waste to landfill within NZ we are actively integrating sustainability into our business. In the 12 months to end of September 2017 Kai Carrier invested 5% of net profit into sustainably focused businesses and educators.
